Daily Overview

Monday 4/27 - We began our day by creating a turtle shell.  Then we cut out the rest of his body parts; a head, a tail, and four feet.  We glued them on a paper.  In circle we learned a new finger play, "My Turtle".  We reviewed our songs for graduation.  Then we read the book Insects.  We talked about insects having three segments to their bodies and six legs.  The photos in the book are wonderful.  Tommy brought in his baby praying mantis for us to see.  We used a magnifying glass to take a closer view.  It was eating a fruit fly.  We learned a little more about the praying mantis, like what it eats, how big it will grow, and how it does not need much water.  We played a rhyming game.  Mrs. Klase gave us a bug and we had to say a rhyming word.  After gym we began some progress check ups and read the book, The Lonely Firefly.

Tuesday 4/28  To start the day we completed our "Y" page for our alphabet book.  We read a book about spiders.  We learned they are different from insects because they have two body parts and eight legs.  They are a lot of different types of spiders.  We were each given a butterfly and had to place it in the correct pile according to color.  Then we checked which pile had the most and the least number of butterflies.  Two piles had the same amount.  We talked about the centers for the week and proceeded to begin.

Our centers for the week are:

  • Math - place the correct number of fingerprint bees at the hive
  • Math - find and match the bugs in Styrofoam peanuts
  • Blocks - students built bee hives
  • Science - use a magnifying glass to look at some insects; a wasp, ladybugs, a stink bug, box elder bugs, and flies
  • Art - create a spider web using marble painting.  Cut eight legs then trace and cut out two circles to make a spider.

Wednesday 4/29  Our day today started by completing our center rotation.  Centers are listed on Tuesday's overview.  After gym we read The Very Quiet Cricket.  This is a book contains a repetitious part which students quickly picked out and began reciting together.  We each told what our favorite insect is and one thing it can do.  We also drew a picture of our favorite thing that we did in preschool this year.  We worked on puzzles while Mrs. Klase and Mrs. Pickel checked our progress on our letters, colors, and shapes.

Thursday 4/30 -  Today we started the day by drawing our favorite insect.  We had a lot of variety.  We did an animal counting paper.  We had to cut out the square with the correct number and match it to the number of animals in each group.  In circle we reread the book, Over in the Meadow.  We went out in Caraway so we had room to act out the different ways the animals were moving.  A very special sharing took place in circle.  Candy, Reagan's guinea pig came to visit.  We each had a chance to hold her and Reagan told us how she cares for her.  Candy had a special treat and we could hear her chewing.  She even squealed for us a couple of times.  We painted our hats for graduation.  We split into two groups and did a counting activity.  Each of us was given a number card and we had to count out that number of tiles.

Friday 5/1 -  We began our day by making My Itsy Bitsy Letter "Y" book.   We finished our feet butterflies by painting the body, gluing it down, and adding eyes.  In circle we took a look at our baby pictures from earlier in the year.  We had a few laughs.  We read the book Frog's Lunch and Two Cool Cows.  We continued checking progress on letters, colors, and shapes.  After snack we played a game of balloon volleyball.
